SAM SIG: The Promise of Mobile, the Realities for Application Developers

  • The Monthly Meeting of the Web Services SIG

    Presentation Summary:

    Instant Messaging with AJAX

Meebo is a browser-based instant messenger, powered by AJAX, that requires no software to download or install and lets users IM from absolutely anywhere. As a web service that embodies the simple mantra of facilitating online communication, meebo has grown to over 600,000 logins a day with 38 million messages carried daily. Using AJAX, meebo is able to provide a fast and snappy interface that delivers messages in real-time. Users are persistently connected to meebo's servers using a Comet-like communication layer. With a Windows-like web framework, but within a browser, meebo provides a slick but familiar interface to users. Events are served real-time and users effectively experience a similar but lighter-weight application experience.

Attendees of this session will hear how meebo leverages open source AJAX technologies as well as incorporating direct user feedback can dramatically improve how products are developed.
