Ruby SIG: One Startup's Experience on Rails

  • The Monthly Meeting of the Ruby SIG

    Presentation Topic:

    One Startup's Experience on Rails

Kris Rasmussen and Andy Holt from Competitious will be sharing their experience using RoR in a production environment in a new startup. In addition, they'll explain some of the many advantages Rails has for companies like theirs and smaller teams, as well as some of the disadvantages and gotchas of production Rails apps. Finally, they'll describe their architecture and cover some unique solutions to common problems, including squeezing extra performance out of AJAX with javascript templates and handling activity logging more elegantly.

    Company Bio

Competitious is an online tool that helps companies track their competition by giving them the ability to collaboratively discover, organize, and share their competitive intelligence. Competitious was born as an internal tool that we built to help keep track of our competition for another project. We had previously tried using a combination of social bookmarking, Excel spreadsheets, text documents, and various other sources of information to manage our research but quickly became frustrated by the lack of organization, security, and efficiency that these disparate services provided. After we finished building some basic functionality for the internal tool, we realized there was a need in the market for a service that people could use to stay updated on their competition. We released the first version of the service in October of 2006 as a unique web-based solution to help firms compete better by using a central tool to organize information on their competition. Competitious is currently privately funded.

    Kris Rasmussen

After leaving Microsoft, Kris launched a business that provides online services to fitness professionals around his web-based vertical content management and e-commerce platform. In October 2006, Kris co-founded Competitious. He graduated in Computer Science with a technical minor in Mathematics from UCLA.

In addition to designing the core product ranking algorithm, he was responsible for marketing and design, as well as font-end development for a large portion of the service. In October 2006, Andrew co-founded Competitious. Andrew holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.
