    Presentation Overview

One common reason for the late completion of projects is project overload – organizations are not realistic about how many projects they can staff with their available resources. In addition, many organizations do not have a systematic methodology for deciding which projects should get critical resources when bottlenecks occur. Many companies have tried to use centralized PERT/Gantt charting software to solve these problems (assigning resources to tasks and rolling up overall project resource demands) but have run into some practical limitations. In this presentation, the speaker will describe the limitations of the PERT/Gantt based approach and will describe an alternative MS Office based project management system that can provide a comprehensive, yet practical solution for both long term and short term resource management.

    • How many projects can be supported with the available resources?
    • Do we have the right mix of skills?
    • Which project should get a critical, over-allocated resource first? What is the impact to the other projects?
    • What is the availability of individual resources for assignment to new projects, given the current project load?
    • Practical limitations in using Gantt charting software for resource analysis
    • Time based vs. task based resource estimation
    • Determining the availability of a resource before assigning/reassigning to a project
    • Methods for rapidly reconciling cross-project resource conflicts
