Steve BlankHaas Business School at U.C. Berkeley and Retired Serial Entrepreneur

    Presentation Overview

The dot-com bubble and the luxury of overcapitalized startups allowed entrepreneurs to get their customers and markets wrong several times before they got it right. While those days are gone and won't be coming back startups are getting funded again. In the course of this talk, you will learn a radical prescription for building and organizing a startup that minimizes market mistakes and cash burn. This "Customer Development" process provides a parallel path to the well understood product development process. One of the positive side effects of Steve's prescription is that you are likely to dramatically increase your chances for a successful financing experience.

    About the Presenter

Steve is a retired serial entrepreneur. Steve has been a founder or participant in eight Silicon Valley startups since 1978. Steve's last company E.piphany (NASDAQ: EPNY) started in his living room in 1996. Steve's other startups include two semiconductor companies (Zilog and MIPS Computers), a workstation company (Convergent Technologies), a supercomputer firm (Ardent), a computer peripheral supplier (SuperMac), a military intelligence systems supplier (ESL) and a video game company (Rocket Science Games). These startups resulted in five IPO's, and three very deep craters. Steve's operational roles have spanned the gamut from CEO to VP of Marketing.

Steve is currently writing a book about the methodology of sales and marketing in high-tech startups and teaches entrepreneurship and the Customer Development process at the Haas Business School at U.C. Berkeley.

Steve serves as a director on the boards of four high-technology companies: Macrovision (NASDAQ: MVSN) and Immersion (NASDAQ: IMMR) as well as Cafepress an on-line marketplace and Pharmix, a drug discovery company. In addition, he serves on the board of Audubon California and the Pescadero Conservation Alliance.
