These private, 25-minute meetings allow start-up members to request advice, make a pitch for funding or get feedback on a business plan. These appointments are filled by random selection from all pre-registered Start-Up members who fit the eligibility criteria outlined in the VC One on One Process.
Brian Goncher, Partner was the founder and President of Frontier Ventures from 1997-2000, a venture catalyst sponsored by four venture capital funds: Crystal Internet Venture Funds, Canaan Capital, Vanguard Venture Partners and Red Rock Ventures. Frontier worked closely with company founders to assist with business strategy, recruitment, and financing-primarily through its venture sponsors. Companies assisted by Frontier Ventures include AllBusiness.com, ReplayTV, Resonate, Silicon Energy, Gazooba, Rapt Technlogies and Dynamic Pictures. Prior to Frontier Ventures, Brian was the founder and Director of Emerging Company Services (ECS) for Coopers & Lybrand from 1991-1996(now part of PriceWaterhouseCoopers). The ECS group provides professional financial consulting services to technology companies in Silicon Valley, which includes business strategy, business plan reviews, financial modeling and matching with venture capital funding sources. Companies assisted by ECS include: Polycom, Network Appliance Corporation, Grand Junction Networks, ZeitNet, Portola Communications, iband Communications, and Mpath Interactive. Brian was a senior executive in several high growth companies from 1985-1990 including Buyer's Club, Gear 1 and ArtSearch. Prior to his entrepreneurial experience, Brian was a legislative assistant to a Member of Congress, Charles Vanik. Brian has BA in economics and MBA in finance from the University of Chicago.
Areas of investment: Brian would like to meet with companies that are Internet-related (A and B rounds of $1-5M with a board seat, usually priced below $10M). The Technology may cover a broad range- from communications and networking gear to software applications and business services based on the Internet. Founders should be highly experienced in their field in both the depth of the technology and readiness of the market for their solution.
Howard Lee, Partner was previously Vice President at Crimson Ventures, a global venture capital firm, where he led communications infrastructure investments in the US and served on the boards of DMW Worldwide, a market support solutions company and Geyser Networks, a SONET access company. Prior to Crimson, he was Vice President and co-founder of Volendam Capital Advisors, a venture fund that invests in emerging growth high technology companies in the US and Europe, including communications and interactive software. His investments at Volendam included Bookham Technologies, an optical components company (NASDAQ:BKHM), and CopperCom, a Voice over DSL access equipment company.Howard has held management positions in product marketing at Applied Materials and has worked as a research investigator in optoelectronics and semiconductor materials at the US Army. Howard has also held engineering positions at IBM and Unisys. Howard has BS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.
Areas of investment: Howard would like to meet with companies that focus on Software for Infrastructure and content development/management.
