Using Technology to Improve the World
In the midst of the many high tech/internet startups, there are those where the primary mission is not about building wealth per se but rather making the world a better place. This program will be a panel of women involved in some of these ventures. You'll have a chance to learn what they are doing, what led them to start these organizations, who they have helped and more.
Jennifer Pahlka, Code for America
Jennifer Pahlka is the founder and executive director of Code for America, which works with talented web professionals and cities around the country to promote public service and reboot government. Government Technology named her one of 2011’s Doers, Dreamers and Drivers in Public Sector Innovation and the Huffington Post named her the top Game Changer in Business and Technology the same year. She is known for her TED talk, Coding a Better Government, and is a frequent speaker at a wide range of events. She spent eight years at CMP Media where she ran the Game Developers Conference, Game Developer magazine, Gamasutra.com and the Independent Games Festival. Previously, she ran the Web 2.0 and Gov 2.0 events for TechWeb, in conjunction with O’Reilly Media, and co-chaired the successful Web 2.0 Expo. Jennifer’s early career was spent in the non-profit sector. She is a graduate of Yale University and lives in Oakland, Calif. with her daughter and eight chickens.
Mona Motwani SparkSF
Mona Motwani, Co-founder of SparkSF, is a human rights attorney and author. Most recently, Mona litigated in the area of housing discrimination and predatory lending at the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. She has also worked at the United Nations in post-war Sarajevo and the Center for Justice and Accountability, a nonprofit that brings civil prosecutions against human rights abusers. Mona has also worked at the voting rights at the ACLU, immigration cases for victims of gender persecution, and advocated for children with disabilities. Mona graduated from University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2005, and received her B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan. She has been a Board Member since 2005.
Jill Finlayson Striking Poverty
Jill Finlayson is VP of Planning and Strategy at Dallant Networks, a communications group building and managing networks for global impact. Their clients include the World Bank (Striking Poverty site) and the Ford Foundation (URB.im site).
Jill has led marketing for Silicon Valley nonprofits, software companies, and numerous startups. Prior to Dallant, she oversaw community engagement and social media programs for the Skoll Foundation's online community, Social Edge. Before that, she was at eBay where she was responsible for the Toys category business unit, which she grew into a half-billion-dollar business, and co-authored the McGraw Hill book Fundraising on eBay. Jill is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley.
M Celine Takatsuno provides strategic leadership to growth-stage organizations in emerging technology and social enterprise. She is presently launching SocialCoding4Good @ Benetech, a program creating sustainable collaboration between open source software projects addressing the world's most pressing challenges and the broader technology community. Founder of Gracepoint, Inc., Celine works with startups building web and mobile applications for data, digital media, and marketplaces, and has led business initiatives for companies including Keibi (now Lithium), Teracent (Google), and ValueClick, Inc. (VCLK). Her commitment to empowering women and girls includes board service with nonprofits The Art of Yoga Project, Asian Women’s Shelter, and Freedom Connect, which leverages the power of technology to support efforts against human trafficking.
Janet Fouts is a social business strategist, author, speaker and entrepreneur. Her books "Social Media Success!" #SOCIALMEDIA PR tweet Google+ for Businesss tweet and "#SOCIALMEDIA NONPROFIT tweet" draw on over 15 years of experience in online marketing and social media, working in the trenches with businesses of all sizes. In addition to her social media coaching practice Janet is founder and CEO at Tatu Digital Media, a San Jose digital marketing agency.
