This talk will cover tools for debugging .NET programs beyond Visual Studio that apps developers are often not familiar with. Understanding these tools lets you fix a wider range of bugs in more contexts, especially production debugging in the field. We'll look at:
- The WinDbg debugger and SOS extension,
- Process Explorer,
- FileMon and
We'll see how to create dump files with ADPlus and analyze them with WinDbg and SOS. Finally, we'll walk through some example crashes and bugs in .NET 1.1 sample programs and diagnose them with these tools.
About the Presenter
Alan Cobb has a programming consultant since 1985, focusing on Microsoft operating systems and languages. More recently, he's been specializing in .NET programming, utilities, and debugging in C#, managed and unmanaged C++, x86 assembler and VB. His clients include Oracle, Borland, Ashton-Tate and Microsoft. In his spare time, he also experiments with speech analysis and recognition technology. Before moving to his current home in Sacramento, Alan was an active member of the Windows SIG.
