    Presentation Overview

A Method to the Madness: A practical approach to applying software engineering methods in real-life

Software Development is a business activity. A business needs an engineering team to bring value to the company by providing accurate, effective technical solutions in an efficient manner. How can you provide that value? And what really works?

Bernie Clark will introduce an easy-to-use five-element framework to help ensure that your engineering team is focused and effective. This framework will provide you with a tool for helping you structure any business organization of any size. Specifically, Bernie will address what skills, what resources, what processes and what environments are required for an engineering department to provide effective products and services. Within the context of this framework, Bernie will provide a deeper insight into the merits/pitfalls when trying to adopt software development methods such as RUP and Agile.

"Bernie can take a rather drab topic (c'mon, iterative development?!) and make it interesting and understandable. It's always a pleasure attending his presentations." – Past Workshop Participant

    About the Presenter

Bernie Clark, Founder, Unified Process Group

Bernie began his IT career in 1980 as a mainframe programmer in the UK, specializing in PL/I, CICS and ADABAS/NATURAL. From 1983 to 1995 he worked in diverse financial and health consulting assignments for Fortune 500 companies in New York, San Francisco and Hawaii, his principal clients being Citibank, CBS, New York City Board of Education, Prudential Insurance and NatWest Bank.

Since 1996 Bernie has worked intensively with the Rational Unified Process and the emerging Unified Modeling Language and established himself an early adopter and mentor of these practices within Charles Schwab. He established Communities of Practice related to Unified Process, Use Cases, and Knowledge Management; the latter of which provided a springboard for him to co-found Pure Knowledge LLC in 1999, a thought leader in the knowledge management arena.

In 2004, Bernie co-founded the Unified Process Group, which specializes in software development methodology and knowledge.

Bernie now provides mentoring and training services for The Unified Process Group. He designs and teaches Business Modeling, Use Case and Architecture training classes and provides guidance on process improvement. He is also the coordinator of the Bay Area Rational User Group, is one of the seven members of the Global Rational User Group Council, and is also a Committer on the Eclipse Process Framework team, which is designing Open/UP, the next generation of the Open Source version of the Unified Process. In his spare time, Bernie is a keen golfer and writer of short stories and poetry.
