Topic: Web Africa – Opportunities and challenges on the next Internet frontier
Internet penetration in Africa is among the lowest in the world: only 5.6% of total population of that continent which amounts to 54 million users (12/2008). Yet, as broadband connectivity improves in cities and beyond of this huge and diverse continent, a major revolution is underway.
With Internet penetration forecast to quickly increase and overall economic growth even in the midst of global economic turmoil, the African web market will be hard to ignore.
From Cairo to Cape Town, outsourced development houses are supporting companies all over the world and innovative young tech startups are building products for both a global and a local African audience. Across the continent, major corporations such as Google, Microsoft and IBM have launched innovation centers to tap local talent and ideas. Meanwhile, numerous projects are underway to bring faster Internet access to the continent through long awaited undersea fiber cables.
Join us next month as we explore the opportunities and challenges in the African web market with speakers working on ventures in North, East and South Africa.
