    Presentation Overview

John Howard is planning to cover as much as he can about WebSnap the new web development environment included with Delphi 6 Enterprise. At least an introductory demo and a discussion of the major components, app development paradigm, design-time tools, web app debugger in the IDE, server-side javascript, and comparisons with WebHub and with Web Broker, the D5 technology.

WebSnap is impressive because of the speed in which an application can be implemented, merely by linking components together, without writing code. Of course, the trick is to understand the components! I will review the components and the resources available to learn WebSnap including downloadables from Borland Community site. (People should bring their own blank diskettes if they want copies of files.)

Gartner, the giant IT consulting firm, is outlining what it considers to be the four most important technology trends of the coming decade. These are hot topics at the company's big conference, taking place this week in Florida. The Gartner Symposium/ITxpo is expected to draw about 10,000 attendees, representing all the big corporate customers. It's a great event. Here is one of the topics.

    Web Services:
By packaging business processes as software components, Web services will drive much of the still-to-be-developed e-business landscape. "Web services will facilitate much faster software development and integration. They will also enable businesses to become more agile, and help them focus on their core competencies," said Alexander Linden, research director for Gartner. "Web services are likely the hottest trend of 2001 and 2002, and are probably still an underestimated technology." This is Gartner getting behind where Microsoft is headed with .Net, if not the technology itself. This will doubtless be a key technology--but it is one most companies are just learning, and it will be a few years before Web services are a major factor in corporate computing, at least as Microsoft imagines it.
