    Presentation Overview

Databases Can Do More Than Just Store Data

Two years ago Perlegen Sciences set out to discover the majority of the common human SNPs and to construct the first comprehensive human haplotype map from these SNPs by re-sequencing 50 genomes – two individual chromosomes from each of 25 people. This goal required the storage and analysis of 119 terabytes of image data from Affymetrix DNA MicroArrays. In just 18 months, Perlegen discovered 1.7M SNPs, and from these SNPs, constructed the first high resolution human haplotype map. This was accomplished using a database-centric approach, based on Oracle 8i. New techniques in data management, application development, and large-scale computing allowed this project to be completed successfully, with a small development team and a relatively modest hardware investment.
