The Houston native and longtime fan of the NBA Rockets developed a set of advanced statistical basketball metrics – he groups players by statistical strengths as precise as rebounding three-point attempts - surmises that a team effectively breaks down to 13 positions rather than five. His analysis took first place at MIT's Sports Analytics Conference in March 2012. The company Alagappan represented, Ayasdi, a data analysis firm run by Stanford University mathematicians, has been contacted by several NBA clubs interested in partnerships.
