    About the session

Culture.com: Building corporate culture in the connected workplace.

Over the past decade, the rapid expansion of the Internet has led to fundamental changes in the way businesses operate. Though the dot.com bubble eventually burst, and thousands of risky new ventures became casualties on the new frontier, even "old-economy" companies with real value propositions and real profits have had to re-invent themselves in order to survive in our increasingly interconnnected world.

The face of the company that most customers see is now its Web site. Firms that used to take orders via phone, fax, and mail now do most of their business via e-commerce. Longtime rivals in such industries as steel and automobiles are working cooperatively in exchanges that increase efficiency and provide benefits to all participants. And the old model of having employees convene daily to work in the same building is often being replaced with telecommuting and other virtual interactions.

While rushing to implement major operational changes, most businesses have not given much attention to something that profoundly affects their ability to operate effectively: corporate culture. If the people that make up a virtual company aren't aligned in their values, their behaviors, and their assumptions, friction may become so high that the company breaks apart. And if the company's culture isn't aligned with its business strategy, the company may be unable to carry out its objectives.

In this informative and entertaining session, culture expert Peg Neuhauser will discuss the challenges that modern companies face in trying to establish and shape their corporate culture, illustrating her points with real-world stories of success and failure. She will offer practical tips and strategies you can apply to help turn your corporate culture into a strategic advantage rather than a liability.
