One of the first steps in determining a viable business idea is evaluating the competitive landscape. Entrepreneurs and emerging-growth companies must demonstrate a clear understanding of their competition prior to discussions with investors. What, exactly, do VC's look for?

Emerging and mature companies often commit substantial resources to competitive analysis for strategic planning, new product development, product management, messaging and communications, and the development of competitive sales tools.

How do you find out whom your competitors – direct and indirect -- are, what they are saying, doing, and planning to do? Where do you go to get the latest and most reliable information? The Internet is one source, and offers myriad ways -- at little or no cost -- to find out what's going on with key players in a hot market, as well as with market makers and new entrants in emerging markets.

In this fast-paced workshop, we'll reveal Internet sources and search strategies, and introduce a few information management tools and techniques used by the pros to get to the "Invisible Web." In addition, we will demonstrate key analytical techniques and various frameworks for organizing and interpreting competitive information.

You will come away with an understanding of what competitive analysis VC's look for, new ideas for how to uncover competitive information from the Internet and a plethora of other sources, and tools to help translate that information into actionable intelligence that will help persuade investors, analysts and customers, drive sales and give you an edge on the competition.
