Description

The Healthcare IT SIG meets bi-monthly, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. It provides a forum for technologists and healthcare providers, as well as members of the investor community and others, to discuss the ways information technology is used in healthcare and to network with one another.

Just as computers and the Internet have become pervasive factors in the rest of our lives, they have become increasingly important in healthcare. The healthcare industry accounts for over $2.7 trillion in the United States, or roughly one sixth of Gross Domestic Product and the costs and proportion of our economy continue to grow. Healthcare IT is, at once, both a component of these increasing costs and a potential way to control costs.

Healthcare information technology helps us in a number if ways. For example, improving our abilities to detect and treat illness (e.g., diagnostic imagery and robotic surgery), helping us manage our health as individuals and as a society (e.g., electronic health records and epidemiological databases), and in some cases, providing less expensive alternatives to replace manual methods (e.g., remote monitoring that precludes the need to visit a clinic as often as before).

Silicon Valley is home to many healthcare technology companies, as well as healthcare provider and ancillary service and research organizations. The Healthcare IT SIG is one of the ways that SVForum works to help facilitate timely industry debates, promote the sharing of knowledge, and enable professional collaboration in the healthcare industry.

Examples of areas we plan to address include: Software, Medical Devices, Mobile Health, Electronic Health Records, Instruments, Networking & Interoperability, Telemedicine, Imaging, Clinical Decision Support, Standards & Regulations, Privacy & Security, and Economics. The format of meetings is expected to vary between presentations, demonstrations, and panel discussions.
