The startup community is looking at all possible ways to extend their runways in these tough times - and venture debt is one of the standard approaches to doing this, but at what cost? During this discussion, we will touch upon some of these issues, including:
John Willard, Deal Team Leader, Silicon Valley Bank. John is responsible for all lending activities and client relationships for venture-backed software companies in Silicon Valley Bank’s South Bay region. He has over 12 years experience providing working capital, venture debt and structured finance solutions to venture-backed technology companies. Prior to joining Silicon Valley Bank in 1996, he held positions at Bank of America and Cupertino National. John holds a BA- Business Administration from California State University - Chico.
Dan Holman, Investment Senior Associate:
Holman joined WTI in 2005 from salesforce.com, which experienced extraordinary growth and completed a successful IPO [NYSE: CRM] during his tenure. Mr. Holman previously worked as an advisor to several startups in the Boston area and was an associate at an early-stage venture fund. Prior to his private sector career, Mr. Holman spent 6-years in the U.S. Navy SEAL teams. Mr. Holman holds a BS in Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Tom has over 17 years experience working as a lawyer in the venture capital and startup technology company field in Silicon Valley. Tom's core area of focus is the securities and finance field, with a focus on helping emerging growth companies, venture funds, and software and hardware computer companies navigate issues concerning securities, capital structure planning, private placements, mergers and acquisitions, venture financing and licensing transactions. Tom has also participated at an operating level at several companies, including a venture fund, boutique investment bank and an ISP. Tom is also an active angel investor in the computer, communications and networking sectors and runs the Harvard Angels (angel group for Harvard Business School NorCal Alum and Harvard Club SF) and the Golden Gate Angels investor group in San Francisco. Tom holds a Bachelor's in Business Administration, magna cum laude, from Loyola Marymount University, a JD from Harvard Law School and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
