Goldman Sachs & Company, The Principal Investment Area
The Principal Investment Area (PIA) is Goldman Sachs' main private equity vehicle. Since 1986, Goldman Sachs and non-affiliated limited partners have invested, either directly or indirectly, in excess of $10 billion of equity in approximately 500 companies diversified across 31 countries by industry and transaction type. Our latest fund, GS Capital Partners 2000 ($5.25 billion), is one of the largest private equity funds in the world. Investments fall into 3 themes: merchant banking, telecom/broadband and technology.

Within the technology sector, PIA seeks to identify opportunities to invest in promising companies at attractive valuations relative to their growth potential and future value. We leverage Goldman Sachs' position as a worldwide leader in high technology investment banking and research. We have built strong VC and entrepreneur relationships with a history of successful investments. Sectors of focus include: semiconductors, optical networking/components, telecom equipment, storage, communications/infrastructure software, and applications software. Within the software sub-sector, PIA focuses on mature companies with over $20 million of revenues as well as promising companies at the Series A & B stages, with proven management teams and strong intellectual property.

Laure Wang is a Vice-President in PIA where she heads up Goldman's software investing effort on the West Coast. She joined Goldman Sachs in 1992 and PIA in 1994. Laure holds a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
