    Technology startup entrepreneurs and those considering launching a technology startup

    As an entrepreneur, you must steer your start-up on the financial path to success. To do so, you need to develop an effective financial roadmap and thoroughly understand how it will unfold over the next 5 years. This roadmap should provide you with a clear vision of your objectives and milestones to a) help you decide whether your project is financially feasible, b) set a common direction for your management team, and c) enable investors and lenders to assess the desirability of funding your venture. Presented by Anthony Nassar of Venture Momentum, Inc., this technical workshop is designed for startup entrepreneurs who are in the process of developing their business plan and seeking angel and/or VC funding. In this workshop, you will learn:

    • a systematic methodology for developing a robust financial plan
    • how to build a credible revenue model
    • rules for building a flexible expense model
    • techniques for preserving scalability and data integrity as you make subsequent updates to the plan
    • ways to validate your model using publicly available data
    • how to project the ownership of the founders, employees, and investors, and the return on investment over the life of the plan
    • various approaches to deriving valuation data from the financial plan
    • how to Debug your financial planning spreadsheet

    You will also receive a printout of the financial model.

    BONUS SEGMENT 1 Jerry Iwata, Vice President with Comerica Bank, will discuss debt financing alternatives for early stage companies including traditional banking, technology banking and non-banking products.

    BONUS SEGMENT 2 Nathan Beckord, MBA/CFA, Partner with VentureArchetypes, LLC, will lead the workshop “A Field Guide to Communicating with Investors”, during which he will present how to deliver the perfect elevator pitch and presentation to investors.

    PLUS! A panel of investors will share their insights on successful funding strategies and answer questions from the audience.

    Nathan Beckord

    Nathan Beckord, MBA/CFA, is a Partner at VentureArchetypes, LLC. VentureArchetypes (www.venturearchetypes.com) is a boutique strategy consulting firm focused on serving the unique needs of emerging technology and life science startups. Nathan has been providing strategic venture consulting services and helping companies develop their business plans for over ten years. He has worked on numerous deals, ranging from seed rounds, to later-stage VC raises, to IPOS. In addition to founding VentureArchetypes, his resume lists JP Morgan and Access Venture Partners, and he has started two technology companies.

    At VentureArchetypes, Nathan focuses on early stage startups in the software, Internet, and consumer electronics markets. Since inception, VentureArchetypes has helped more than 70 companies achieve their launch, growth, partnering and funding goals. Nathan has grown the consulting practice to include offices in New York, Denver, and Phoenix, with headquarters in San Francisco.

    Jeff Clavier

    Based in Palo Alto (CA), Jean-Francois "Jeff" Clavier is the Founder and Managing Partner of SoftTech VC, a firm doing angel investments and providing consulting services to early stage consumer Internet startups. Jeff will typically get involved as an advisor, board member or part-time executive, focusing on business development, fund raising, and strategy matters.

    His current areas of interests include next generation search, social media (blogging, syndication, aggregation), consumer infrastructure and open source. These are also the primary topics covered on his blog, Software Only - alongside venture capital, startup and industry news, conferences,...

    Jeff has spent over sixteen years in the software market, as an entrepreneur, a senior executive and a venture capitalist. Throughout his career, he got exposed to the global market: leading development teams in Europe and on Wall Street, designing products that were sold internationally and investing in software infrastructure startups across the USA and Europe.

    Rob Hayes

    Rob joined First Round Capital in 2006. Rob came to First Round Capital from Omidyar Network where he was their first venture investor. He led most of Omidyar Network's initial venture capital deals and later built and ran the technology investing group.

    Prior to joining Omidyar Network in 2004, Rob was at Palm where he started up their corporate venture fund. While in that role he also managed the strategy effort around Palm OS that led to the spinout of PalmSource. Rob started at Palm as product manager for the initial device-independent releases of Palm OS. During this time, Rob was responsible for the versions of Palm OS on dozens of devices including the initial Treo products.

    Rob previously spearheaded complex, system-level product development efforts at companies such as Geoworks and Go Corp where he focused on building products for the Japanese market. He began his career with the Japan External Trade Organization, studying international trade issues and building relationships between US and Japanese businesses, at a time when trade friction between the two countries was at its peak.

    Rob has an MBA from Columbia University and a B.A. in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley.

    David Hornik

    David Hornik is a General Partner with August Capital. He invests broadly in information technology companies, with a focus on consumer facing software and services, enterprise applications and infrastructure software. Prior to joining August Capital, David was an intellectual property and corporate attorney at Venture Law Group, Cravath Swaine & Moore, and Perkins Coie LLP. David teaches business and law at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and writes about the venture capital industry in VentureBlog (www.ventureblog.com). David sits on the board of Six Apart, VideoEgg, PayCycle, DoneRight, Nomis and Splunk.

    Anthony Nassar

    Anthony Nassar is the Founder and Principal of Venture Momentum. As a consulting CFO, he helps startup entrepreneurs put together the pieces of their financial puzzle by providing a solid foundation from which to successfully raise capital, manage growth and achieve liquidity. Anthony brings to Venture Momentum's clients 20 years of financial management experience. He has assisted start-ups and small businesses on various matters including angel and venture financings, acquisitions, due diligence, accounting systems automation, financial reporting and internal controls. Throughout his assignments, he has advised companies on transactions valued at well over $100 million. Prior to launching Venture Momentum 12 years ago, Anthony held senior management positions in finance and corporate planning with Nexcom Technology, Inc., Fair Isaac Corporation and a consulting group in France.

    Anthony is the editor and publisher of Propel Your Venture, a monthly electronic newsletter for start-up entrepreneurs and their advisors. He holds an MBA in Finance from New York University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur from Ecole Centrale de Paris in France.
