As an entrepreneur, you must steer your start-up on the financial path to success. To do so, you need to develop an effective financial roadmap and thoroughly understand how it will unfold over the next 5 years. This roadmap should provide you with a clear vision of your objectives and milestones to a) help you decide whether your project is financially feasible, b) set a common direction for your management team, and c) enable investors and lenders to assess the desirability of funding your venture
This is a technical workshop designed for start-up entrepreneurs who are in the process of developing their business plan and seeking angel or VC funding. In this workshop, you will learn:
- a systematic methodology for developing a robust financial plan
- how to build a credible revenue model
- rules for building a flexible expense model
- techniques for preserving scalability and data integrity as you make subsequent updates to the plan
- ways to validate your model using publicly available data
- how to project the ownership of the founders, employees, and investors, and the return on investment over the life of the plan
- various approaches to deriving valuation data from the financial plan
- how to Debug your financial planning spreadsheet
You will also receive a printout of the financial model.

John Balen joined Canaan Partners in 1995, and serves as General Partner in the firm's Menlo Park, California office. He is primarily focused on investments in information technology companies.
Prior to joining Canaan, John served as a Managing Director of Horsley Bridge Partners, a multi-billion dollar private equity investment firm headquartered in San Francisco, California. During his nine-year tenure at Horsley Bridge Partners, he was responsible for a wide spectrum of investments in high technology companies, venture capital partnerships and buyout partnerships. Earlier in his career, he was a sales applications engineer at Codenoll Technology Corporation, a fiber communications start-up, and an engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation. John received a BS in electrical engineering and an MBA from Cornell University. He currently serves on the boards of Command Audio, Commerce One, Dexterra, Echopass, Everdream, ID Analytics, Istante Software, and Silicon Optix. He previously served on the boards of Rightpoint, which was acquired by E.piphany, and Intraware.
Adam Dolinko is a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. His practice entails a wide variety of corporate and securities matters. Adam works with a broad range of clients, from entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies on a multitude of transactions, including complex mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, strategic alliances, public offerings, private equity, private debt, and venture capital financings. Adam has represented companies in a range of different industries, including software, hardware, semiconductors, Internet, telecommunications, biotechnology, retail, and media. On numerous occasions, Adam's transactions have crossed boarders and cultures, including in the United Kingdom, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany, India, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, and Mexico, among others. Notwithstanding Adam's dedication to building the success of business enterprises, Adam makes time to contribute his skills to the community on a pro bono basis.
Adam earned his B.A. with honors from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1990, and earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Southern California in 1993, where he was both a merit scholar and Senior Editor for the USC Law Review.
Todd Forrest is Chief Financial Officer for Hummer Winblad Venture Partners. Most recently he was an Executive-in-Residence at Hummer Winblad, providing advisory services to portfolio companies in the areas of business strategy development, financial and operational planning and analysis, contract review and negotiation, corporate governance, accounting and operational policies and procedures, financing alternatives, and cash management strategies. Prior to joining Hummer Winblad, Todd was the Vice President - Finance & Administration at Critical Path, Inc., where he oversaw financial planning, management information systems, tax, treasury and accounting. Prior to Critical Path, Todd was an audit manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he delivered advisory services to multi-national public and private companies primarily in the technology, telecommunications, and financial services industries. Todd is a CPA and received a B.S. in Accountancy from Bentley College.
Mohanjit Jolly is Managing Director with Garage Technology Ventures. He has been with Garage since July 1999. While at Garage, Jolly has worked with over 20 companies, including LeftHand Networks, PureSight, IP3 Networks, and Xora. Prior to joining Garage Technology Ventures, Jolly was part of the technology and business development group at Mattel, where he helped launch the Mattel/Intel joint venture, Intel Play. He also spent three years in both engineering and business development roles with Itek Optical Systems, a manufacturer of high-resolution reconnaissance systems for both military and commercial use. While earning his M.B.A from the Anderson School at UCLA, Jolly helped found ViaSpace, a technology incubator in Southern California in conjunction with Caltech and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Jolly earned a B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, with a specialization in electric propulsion systems.
Anthony Nassar works with start-up entrepreneurs who wrestle with finance and accounting. He helps them put together the pieces of their financial puzzle by providing a solid foundation from which to successfully raise capital, manage growth and achieve liquidity. Anthony brings to Venture Momentum's clients 18 years of financial management experience. He has assisted start-ups and small businesses on various matters including angel and venture financings, acquisitions, business plans, due diligence, accounting systems automation, financial reporting, internal controls, stock options plans and employee benefits. Throughout his assignments, he has advised companies on transactions valued at well over $100 million. Prior to launching Venture Momentum 10 years ago, Anthony held senior management positions in finance and corporate planning with Nexcom Technology, Inc., Fair Isaac Corporation and a consulting group in France.
Anthony is the editor and publisher of Propel Your Venture, a monthly electronic newsletter for start-up entrepreneurs and their advisors. He holds an MBA in Finance from New York University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur from Ecole Centrale de Paris in France. He is a member of SDForum, SVASE and SofTECH.
Michel Wendell has 20 years of broad experience in launching and managing international Infocom companies. By advising successful start-ups and billion-dollar market leaders in Finland, Sweden, France and the United States, Mr. Wendell has gained a thorough understanding of the changing dynamics of globalizing markets and rapidly developing technologies. His extensive network of contacts in Silicon Valley, where he resides, is a significant resource to Nexit's portfolio companies.
Before co-founding Nexit Ventures Mr. Wendell served as Vice President of Business Development at Cadence Design Systems. He founded EuroVAR, a European-wide network of Windows based EDA solution distributors, and was VP Europe for OrCAD, Inc., a leading PC based design tool vendor.
Previously, Mr. Wendell launched Mentor Graphics' Scandinavian operations in Stockholm, Sweden, and subsequently headed European Marketing and Product Development from Paris, France, after which he managed partnership programs on a corporate level, based in corporate HQ in Beaverton, OR, USA. He has also worked for Nokia in Finland in various positions including technical application and sales management.
