Windows SIG: Getting Data in Silverlight 3

  • Join us at the Windows SIG meeting on Thursday, August 27, at the Microsoft Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View.  Food and drinks will be served starting at 6:30 PM.  The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM.  Please RSVP to so we can order the appropriate amount.

The topic of our meeting is Getting Data in Silverlight 3.

Silverlight is a great vehicle for business applications on the web.  Application users aren't just watching videos on Silverlight; they're querying, creating, modifying, deleting, validating, securing and saving.  They need "Data Services" infrastructure to help master and manage the complexity.  The familiar, two-tier approaches don't work on Silverlight because the client doesn’t have a clear line-of-sight to the database.

You can write the n-tier plumbing yourself or turn to off-the-shelf alternatives.  This session will highlight the issues and challenges, talk briefly about RIA Services from Microsoft, and then about the popular DevForce for Silverlight product from IdeaBlade.  There will be code.  You will discover that, with a little help, it's pretty easy to get your Silverlight business application built and in customers' hands.

Our presenter is Ward Bell.  Ward is VP of Technology at IdeaBlade in Emeryville, CA and a Microsoft MVP Solutions Architect.  Ward was a consultant building enterprise applications for several Fortune 500 companies in the 20+ years before helping to found IdeaBlade.  He still gets invited to speak at venues like TechEd, MIX and Patterns & Practices.  Follow him at his blog, on Twitter or write him at

Note:  This event is free to SDForum members and Microsoft employees.  Non-SDForum members can either pay $15 at the door or join SDForum as a member for 12 months for $125.
