    Presentation Overview

    SIP-Based Instant Messaging and Presence

Instant Messaging and Presence services were once proprietary solutions run by a handful of large providers. Today the large providers are still in the game, but upcoming standardization of instant messaging protocols by the IETF aims to create an open environment for all players.

At this talk you will hear the early history of the first IM standardization efforts at IETF. Learn about the SIMPLE Working Group's extensions to SIP to support presence and IM. See the power of integrating SIP's session management and rendezvous functionality with mobile presence. Discover why Microsoft and Lotus chose SIP. Finally, discuss what voice application designers and programmers can do to harness the power of SIMPLE.
