Healthcare IT Evening Event: Medical User Interfaces – it ought to be about engagement

Description

  • Every device has a User Interface (UI). It consists of the ways you interact with the device to get it to do what you want it to do and to get information from it.

Too often medical UI’s take their cues either from general-purpose applications like word processing programs or from the most recent smartphone app interface that the software guy thought was the coolest. This is the wrong way to do it if you want your users to engage with the product, learn how to do more with it, and enjoy the experience.

Simple to use can never really be simple enough. Ask healthcare professionals how the latest app should work for helping a patient manage their chronic disease and they will often tell you what the patient ought to do – when a more successful product, especially in terms of medical outcome, is probably one that understands how to move a patient to better self-management and deals with the reality of how most patients don’t want to make a project out of their disease. Your next medical UI needs to figure out how to fit into a patient’s life as seamlessly as possible.

A UI to help surgeons who need to navigate deep into the lungs under virtual guidance rather than direct visualization may look like a video game. What happens when old-school surgeons from the generations before video gaming try and learn it? In this realm, how do you navigate if you don’t have a horizon?

This presentation is about meeting diverse usability and customer appeal challenges like these. Participants will come away with a new perspective on what it takes to design medical UIs and actionable ideas to tackle their own UI challenges.

Are you a device developer working on a UI? Contact us before the meeting (HealthcareITsig@svforum.org) and we’ll see about addressing some of your concerns during the Questions and Answers period.

Are you a health care professional with some pet peeves about the devices you use? Again, contact us ahead of time and we’ll see whether our speakers can address them in this presentation.
