Topic: Leadership vs. Management: VP Panel on the Leadership Challenge of Engineering
Years ago an engineering manager who was a technical genius with a few people skills would have carried the day in many companies.  But now engineering managers may be leading teams that span 4 continents and 7 time zones, speak different languages (as different as English and American!), come from a wide diversity of cultural backgrounds and work environments.  Increasingly, the challenges facing engineering managers is not management, it’s leadership.  What’s the difference?  Managers plan, organize, staff, budget and control.  Leaders set direction, align people, motivate and inspire.  Naturally all of this matters, but it has been said “You manage cows, but you lead people.”

Our VP of Engineering panel will explore the greatest leadership challenges facing engineering managers today in this rapidly changing global business world. This group is also co-authoring a book together on this topic.

    About the Panel Host:

Before joining eGain, Sam was VP of Engineering at Purisma, where he was responsible for all product development activities.   Other positions held by him include Director of Product Marketing - Architecture and Infrastructure at Siebel Systems, VP of Engineering at, and Co-Founder and CTO at DocuMagix.

Sam has a BS in Mathematics from Stanford University. He is active in various professional groups in Silicon valley, and is a partner at Sand Hill Angels, a private equity firm.
