    Presentation:
    Computational neuroscience is making progress! Come join us as Dileep George, co-founder (with Jeff Hawkins) and principle architect of Numenta, explains how Numenta's pattern recognition technology works.
    Numenta is the commercial spinout of the Redwood Neuroscience Institute, and the company is exploring a new computing paradigm that replicates the structure and function of the human neocortex. Its Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) technology has the potential to allow computers to solve problems that are easily solved by humans but not (currently) by machines, e.g. recognizing dangerous traffic situations.
    An HTM system is not programmed in the traditional sense; instead it is trained. Sensory data is applied to the bottom of the hierarchy and the HTM system automatically discovers the underlying patterns in the sensor input. You might say it "learns" what objects are in the world and how to recognize them.
    Audience members who want to try out the software can do so - it's downloadable from the website, and Numenta is now working to create and support an open, collaborative community of companies and individuals developing HTM systems.

    Speaker Bio: Dileep George, Founder and Principal Architect, Numenta
    Founder Dileep George¹s interest in discovering how the human brain functions began soon after hearing a seminar on the topic while as a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His primary research interests are in understanding the organizational properties of the world and in linking that to the cortical micro-circuitry and architecture. Dileep joined the Redwood Neuroscience Institute as a Graduate Research Fellow and began working closely with Jeff Hawkins in extending and expressing Jeff¹s neuroscience theories in mathematical terms. He created the first proof-of-concept program to illustrate these concepts, which triggered the launch of Numenta with Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky in 2005. Within five months of Numenta¹s founding, Dileep and his team created the first prototype of HTM technology. Prior to his graduate studies, Dileep served as a Principal Engineer in several communications-related start-up companies. Dileep holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology
    in Bombay and a Master¹s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
