Topic: The Federal Government and Cloud Computing

The Federal Government is aggressively pursuing a cloud computing agenda. The new Federal CIO, Vivek Kundra, has made the cloud a high priority for the Obama administration. This month's Cloud Services SIG will focus on Federal efforts in the cloud arena and highlight several cloud computing initiatives the government is pursuing. This is a must-see opportunity to understand what the Federal government is up to with respect to cloud computing.

    Speakers:

Joshua McKenty, Technical Architect, Nebula Project.

Nebula is a Cloud Computing pilot under development at NASA Ames Research Center. It integrates a set of open-source components into a seamless, self-service platform, providing high-capacity computing, storage and network connectivity using a virtualized, scalable approach to achieve cost and energy efficiencies. The fully-integrated nature of the Nebula components provide for extremely rapid development of policy-compliant and secure web applications, fosters and encourages code reuse, and improves the coherence and cohesiveness of NASA's collaborative web applications. When completed, Nebula will offer cost-effective Infrastructure-as-a-Service(IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service(PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service(SaaS). As a hybrid cloud, Nebula enhances NASA’s ability to collaborate with external researchers by providing consistent tool sets and high-speed data connections.

Joshua McKenty will give a business and technical overview of the just-launched Nebula cloud computing project. Joshua is the technical architect of the project, and designed the service capabilities present in the platform to ensure robustness, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

    Bernard Golden, CEO, HyperStratus

Bernard recently spent a week in Washington, DC, meeting with Congressional Committee staff members and various Federal agencies to discuss their cloud computing initiatives and concerns. In this presentation, Bernard will share the status of the overall Federal cloud computing initiative, the recommendations he gave to the groups he met with, and upcoming milestones and deliverables for the Federal cloud. Learn what's top-of-mind for Federal cloud computing efforts and how the commercial cloud ecosystem will integrate and benefit from the Federal government's cloud efforts.
