Title: Modern Databases 101 (5:30-6:30 PM)
Note: If you are an early bird, this is an additional bonus presentation and not the regular meeting and networking which starts at 6:30.

Speaker:  Corrinne Kahler; Kahler Advantage - analytics consulting; co-chair SVF BI SIG

    Abstract:
The BI SIG presents loads of the latest and greatest information about BI and Analytics and sometimes our experts get pretty technical. If you are in a field that is not into bits and bytes, some of the concepts may be a little overwhelming. This presentation will fill you in on the basics of modern databases.
    • What is data and why do we need databases.
    • What are the different database types, what industries use them and who are key vendors.
    • What are the pros and cons of database types.
    • What are today’s issues with data and tools and what’s in the future.

    Main Topic - (6:30-9:00 PM)
Title: Stream Computing for Big Data Analytics in Real-Time

    Speaker:
Kevin Foster is Implementation Strategist for IBM's Big Data Product Engineering organization. His focus is in helping IBM customers and partners to survive and prosper from the large amounts of "big data" generated by mobile phones, smart grids, city traffic, hospitals and other increasingly computerized aspects of our modern lives. Kevin has a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from California State University Stanislaus and a Masters degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.

    Abstract:
It is practically ingrained within IT practitioners that first you store your data only to then pick it back up again to analyze. Big data, little data, any size data - it makes no difference. The scale changes, but the pattern does not.

While data partitioning, clusters, solid state disk drives, in-memory databases, and other technologies can reduce the time required for that round-trip into and out of storage, they can never eliminate it. Which is fine when leisurely looking over your shoulder at the history of where you've been, but is a lot less than ideal when you're trying to quickly look ahead to see where you're going. Or to put it more simply, hearing the phrase "this is your opportunity" is a lot more valuable than hearing "that was your opportunity - sorry".

Stream computing is a technique for the continuous analysis of data as it is created without the inherent delays of storage. In this talk we will review the architecture and several sample use cases for stream computing, with a live demonstration of a stream computing development platform.
