DJ Patil, Chief Scientist and Sr. Director of Product at LinkedIn will tell us about analytics at LinkedIn.

Title:  The Analytics behind LinkedIn: A new model for Analytics and Business Intelligence
LinkedIn is the predominant professional social networking site.  With over 43 million users, around the world LinkedIn’s services allow members to connect and collaborate in new ways.  One of LinkedIn’s strategic advantages is their unique data.  While most organizations consider data as a service function, LinkedIn considers data a cornerstone of their product portfolio.   This emphasis on data as a product led LinkedIn to be the first social network site to deploy a People You May Know service.  Other data products that LinkedIn has built include Who Viewed My Profile, People Who Viewed This Profile Also Viewed..., and the backend standardization algorithms that power search.  To rapidly develop these products LinkedIn leverages a number of technologies including Hadoop, R, Asterdata, and Processing.  In this presentation, Dr. Patil will talk about how and why the LinkedIn product organization is structured the way it is, the technologies that support analytics, and a peek behind the scenes at some of the products that the Analytics team is building.

    Speaker:

Dr. DJ Patil is the Chief Scientist and Sr. Director of Product.  He is responsible for all analytics projects including reporting, web analytics, as well as products on the site that take advantage of leveraging LinkedIn's unique data set. Some of their products include, People You May Know, Who Viewed My Profile, and the product recommendation engines.

Previous to LinkedIn, Dr. Patil was a Distinguished Research Scientist and the Director for Strategy, Product, and Analytics of Corporate Architecture at eBay Inc.  As faculty at the University of Maryland, he helped start a major research initiative on numerical weather prediction.  In 2001 he jointly received a 21st Century Award from the James S. McDonnell Foundation for innovative and ground breaking work on characterizing the complexity of weather. Two of his research papers are currently ranked #1 and #9 as the most cited papers in their areas.  In 2004 Dr. Patil was selected as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow for the Department of Defense. During his fellowship he directed new efforts to leverage social network analysis and the melding of computational and social sciences to anticipate emerging threats to the US. He also co-chaired a major review of US efforts to prevent bioweapons proliferation in Central Asia and co-founded the Iraqi Virtual Science Library (IVSL). In 2006 the Iraqi Ambassador to the US hailed the IVSL as one of the most important projects for education and helping Iraqi scientists, doctors, and engineers rebuild their country.
