Quarterly Venture Breakfast - 2012: The Year in Review
Online registration is now closed. Walk-ins welcome. Additional $10 at the door.
2012 was a confusing year, full of good and bad news. VCs invested roughly $27B, down from $29B in 2011, but VC fundraising was up to $20B vs $14B in 2011, so the VCs invested $7B more than they raised in 2012, $15B in 2011, and $10B more than they raised in 2010, an unsustainable model. Three of the top 4 sectors in 2012- cleantech, biotech, and medical devices - all face major obstacles and spark much skepticism from many investors. Software seems to be eating the world, as Marc Andreessen predicted.
Roughly 50 VC backed companies went public in the US in 2012, about the same as 2011, a modest year from a historical perspective. The VC market is in disequilibrium...it cannot stay like this. Will 2013 be better, worse, or the same as 2012? Only our experts know! Come hear the answers!
