Emerging Tech SIG: Are You a Data Scientist or a Data Janitor?
Are You a Data Scientist or a Data Janitor?
Prakash Nanduri, Co-founder / CEO at Paxata
Hadoop, SAP HANA and other technologies are evidence that there has been a lot of focus on the back-end collection and storage of big data in the last five years. And certainly the front-end business intelligence space has seen tremendous innovation from Tableau, Qlik and others.
However, when it comes to getting data ready for analytics – the process of cleaning, de-duping, integrating and harmonizing disparate data sets, no innovation has occurred. In fact, for over 30 years, there have only been two choices:
1) An expensive and labor-intensive IT-driven ETL process
2) A manual, error-prone, ad-hoc process executed in Excel or SQL
Today, the business users who have had a taste for self-service BI want to see innovation around the data prep process. They are using the IT-sanctioned data coming from corporate systems but they now have access – and want to use – data from the Web, from 3rd parties, from wherever it comes from…and they don’t want to be slowed down in order to use it.
A new breed of tools are coming on the market. This session will discuss the requirements for big data integration, quality, enrichment, collaboration and governance. We will keep it very vendor neutral and only talk about the issues surrounding the way we have to do data prep today and why this won’t work in the new world of big data.
About Our Speaker:
Prakash Nanduri, Co-founder / CEO of Paxata
Prakash is a 20-year entrepreneur and software visionary in start-up and large companies. As Prakash watched innovations and technologies emerge for back-end data management (with Hadoop, SAP Hana, etc.) and for front-end business user analytics (with Tableau, Qlik, Spotfire, BOBJ), he realized he was seeing nothing that bridged the gap between raw data and rapid decisions. The insight led him to co-found Paxata. Prakash previously co-founded Velosel Corporation to pioneer technology and solutions in Master Data Management. He subsequently drove the growth of that company, securing over $40 million in venture capital financing, recruiting the management team, and serving on the Board of Directors. In 2005, TIBCO acquired Velosel and Prakash led post-merger integration and the acquisition of Spotfire, then spent three years at SAP as Head of Product and Technology Strategy within the Office of the CEO, where he led initiatives including the SAP Big Data (Hana) business strategy.
