Description

  • Organization Metrics and Agile Adoption

Speakers: Dan Greening and Jeff McKenna

Key performance indicators are used by some large enterprises to alert executives to opportunities and dangers. Executives seek “leading indicators” to help them make decision early enough to make a difference.

In large enterprises adopting agile practices, managers sometimes use behavioral compliance metrics to help teams self-assess or to gauge how practices are performed. These often cause dysfunctions, especially when coupled with incentives to meet metric-based targets.

We will introduce and discuss a set of scalable metrics that articulate the “Why? ” of agile practices, and allow freedom for teams to explore their own approaches. Anecdotally, these approaches seem to produce improved Product Owner communication, team member alignment, more accurate forecasting and higher quality software production.

Dan Greening, Ph. D., leads international enterprises in sustainable agile transformations. He currently manages agile coaching at a large international software company. He previously led transformations at Citrix Online and Overstock.com. Sustainable agility requires addressing the whole company as a system: applying agile principles to project funding and portfolio management, employee training and growth, transforming managers to contribute strategically, tracking dozens of Scrum teams, prioritizing coaching efforts, measuring corporate agility, establishing a responsibility culture, changing HR practices and hiring to support agility, identifying true root causes of problems and addressing them effectively, dealing with offshoring. Dan has helped shape these areas at scale.

Jeff McKenna has been in the software field for over 50 years. He has held positions as coder, tester, architect, scrum master, product owner, coach, mentor, business owner, evangelist, speaker, consultant and gadfly. By always keeping himself on the leading edge, Jeff has retained a kind of tempered, some might say cynical, youthful enthusiasm about all things software. He is especially interested in empowering teams of developers that utilize the latest tools and techniques to produce awesome result in a timely manner.
