TOPIC: Opportunities in MultiChannel ECommerce: Social Media Channels

Location for this month: Microsoft, 1065 La Avenida, Building 2 Lobby/BizSpark, Mountain View

Based on our member survey results, we decided to follow up on a couple of interesting threads we uncovered last year:  RichRelevance stated in a past meeting that Pinterest has one of the highest average spending per online shopper; Wrapp also pointed out that the $100 billion gift card industry was ripe for disruption and perfect for social commerce integration.   We want to further explore these trends and how it fits in the e-commerce landscape.  In that vein, are we are delighted to have the founders of Gyft and ShopInterest and the director of InfusionSoft come and speak about their company and to opine about their thoughts of where social e-commerce is headed.

As you know, social media as an e-commerce channel is still in its infancy. But the numbers are growing. Fast.

Traffic: On average, retailers get 4.25% of their total site traffic directly from Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest (Social Media 300 guide).

Sales: Merchants brought in a total of $1.6 billion in social commerce sales last year, less than 1% of the $224.2 billion in U.S. online retail sales projected for 2012 by eMarketer, a research firm focused on online marketing and commerce.

Our panelists will help us to explore the following questions:

What are the ROI of Facebook ads or Sponsored Tweets?

Should merchants use social media as:

    •   Ad platform
    •   Selling platform

What is the most effective use of social media:

    •     Brand Discovery
    •     Customer Loyalty
    •     Customer Service
    •     etc

What are the social media tools and best practices used by merchants for monitoring and refining their social media investments & promoting frictionless commerce?

What are the opportunities for consumers to make money by using their own "Brand" name  to recommend goods and services via social media?
