    Description

Matterport, Artec and GrowShapes (for the DAVID scanner) will discuss current and emerging 3D scanning technologies. Individual presentations will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by SIG Co-Chair Geoffrey Doyle.

    Artec 3D Scanner  (http://artec-group.com/)

Artec Group develops and sells 3D scanners. Their 3D scanners (also known as 3D cameras) work in real time and are used in diverse fields such as reverse engineering, medical imaging, archeology, art digitalization, computer animation, prototyping, and anthropology. Artec Group also has a whole division, Artec ID, dedicated to biometric security and 3D face recognition technology. Their newest application, Shapify.me (http://shapify.me), allows you to scan yourself or others at home with Kinect  to create realistic 3D printed figurines.

3D Reconstruction of Spaces with Matterport (http://matterport.com/)

The Matterport 3D System uses a patented camera, controlled through the user’s Apple iPad, to capture 3D and 2D images of an interior space. The camera rotates on a tripod that the user places around a room to capture every aspect of the space. Matterport’s proprietary technology then stitches together the data to create one complete 3D mesh with images overlaid onto all surfaces.  These models are then ready for users to walk through the interior, view as a doll-house, or see a floorplan through Matterport’s immersive online interface. The models also include complete linear and area measurement data. The resulting model can be viewed, modified, annotated, and shared using any computer or the Apple iPad.

Matterport 3D models can be used for planning of spaces within and around homes, offices, hotels, stores, and event venues.  Users can reconfigure furnishings, appliances, flooring, paint, displays, and structures before doing a virtual walk through of the new space.  This is a powerful tool to improve the decision-making process across a range of industries, including home improvement, retail store planning, construction project management, property insurance, real estate, hospitality, venue planning, and security.

DAVID 3D Scanner with GrowShapes (http://www.growshapes.com)

The DAVID SLS-2 scanner employs the innovative Structured Light technology, which allows precise 3D scanning in a matter of seconds. The scanner is mobile and can be placed easily in front of the surface to be scanned. A single click in the DAVID software starts the scan - and a few seconds later the digitized 3D model shows up on your screen. his way you can subsequently scan all sides of the object, and finally combine them to a closed 360° model. The modular hardware setup allows a flexible adaptation to your object - any size from coin to couch is possible.

The DAVID scanner results can be exported into common 3D file formats (OBJ, STL, PLY) and processed in other applications, such as for rapid prototyping, inspection, product presentations, archeology and cultural heritage, works of art, computer animations, and video games.

    Matt Bell
Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Matterport (http://matterport.com/)

When Matt left Google’s research team at 22, he wanted to create environments in which people interact with computers in an intuitive, natural way. Matt founded Reactrix, where he formed the technology team and provided the key computer vision innovations behind the interactive floor displays that let millions of people play with virtual koi ponds and soccer balls. When Matt first saw Microsoft’s Kinect product, he recognized the huge spectrum of computer vision applications it could power. He chose to focus Matterport on building models of real things because of the potential to help millions of people communicate in 3D. When Matt isn’t rallying the team at Matterport, he likes to organize community hacking events. Matt earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Stanford University.

    About the SIG
The 3D Printing and Scanning Special Interest Group (SIG) provides a forum for technologists and companies, as well as members of the investor community and other interested parties, to discuss the critical aspects of the technology that require improvement, future direction of the technology and to network with one another.  The majority of innovation and investment in 3D printing-related technologies to date has not been centered in Silicon Valley, and this SIG aims to contribute to changing this for what is considered by many as the next trillion dollar market.
